A COOLER, MORE COMFORTABLE JOURNEY

Warm air?
Let’s find the cause.

Air conditioning removes heat and moisture from the cabin. The refrigerant circulates between the compressor, condenser, expansion device and evaporator, carrying heat out of the car.

Low refrigerant can reduce cooling, but a regas is not the answer to every fault. Weak airflow, an electrical problem or a failed component can produce similar symptoms. Tell us what has changed and whether the system has been recharged before.

01

Air is no longer cold

Possible causes include low refrigerant, a leak, a compressor fault or poor condenser cooling.

02

Weak airflow

A blocked cabin filter, blower issue or air distribution fault may need attention.

03

Cooling fades after a regas

A leak needs investigation. Repeated recharging can leave the underlying fault unresolved.

04

Smells, noise or slow demisting

Cabin hygiene, drainage or a mechanical fault may be involved. Cleaning and refrigerant servicing do different jobs.

THE RIGHT REFRIGERANT FOR YOUR VEHICLE

R134a or R1234yf?

We work with both. The vehicle’s specification decides which gas to use—not simply its age.

R134a

Common on older vehicles

R134a has been widely used in automotive air conditioning for many years. A system designed for it must be serviced with the correct refrigerant, charge quantity and compatible compressor oil.

It is not interchangeable with R1234yf. A newer gas is not a routine upgrade for an older system.

R1234yf

Common on newer vehicles

R1234yf is a lower global-warming-potential refrigerant used in many modern cars. It requires suitable service equipment and the specified lubricant. Its handling characteristics differ from R134a, including mild flammability.

A registration year alone is not enough to identify it: check the under-bonnet label or manufacturer data.

How to identify your gas

The A/C label usually shows the refrigerant name and the charge weight in grams. If you cannot find it, give us your registration and vehicle details. Some vehicles use other systems, including R744 (CO₂); contact the team to confirm suitability. Hybrid and electric vehicles also require care over the specified compressor oil.

REFRIGERANT RECOVERY & RECHARGE

What does a regas involve?

A measured service, tailored to your vehicle.

01

Identify & inspect

Confirm the refrigerant and specified charge, discuss the symptoms and inspect accessible components for obvious damage or leakage.

02

Recover & assess

Recover the remaining refrigerant using suitable equipment. The amount recovered can help inform diagnosis; it does not identify the location of a leak.

03

Evacuate & recharge

Evacuation helps remove air and moisture. Recharge by the manufacturer’s specified weight, with oil or dye only where appropriate to the vehicle and work performed.

04

Check performance

Check cooling operation and outlet temperature under suitable conditions. If performance remains poor, further fault investigation may be needed.

A regas replenishes refrigerant. It does not repair a leak.

If the system is empty, loses its charge quickly or shows evidence of a fault, discuss leak investigation before a recharge. A vacuum-hold check alone cannot prove that a system is leak-free under operating pressure.

DIAGNOSIS BEFORE REPLACEMENT

Air-con repairs:
follow the fault.

Cooling faults can involve the refrigerant circuit, electrical controls or cabin airflow. Ask the team about diagnosis and repair options for your vehicle.

Condenser & pipework

The condenser sits at the front of many vehicles, where road debris and corrosion can cause damage. Pipes, seals, joints and service valves can also leak.

Compressor & controls

Noise, poor compression or a control fault may affect operation. Low charge can prevent the compressor from running, so a stopped compressor is not automatically a failed compressor.

Fans, sensors & electrics

Condenser fan operation, pressure sensors, wiring and control signals can all influence cooling. A fault may be more noticeable at idle than while driving.

Evaporator & cabin airflow

An evaporator leak may be harder to locate or access. Cabin filters, blower motors, drains and temperature flaps can affect airflow, odour and comfort.

After a repair, the system may need further leak testing, evacuation and an accurately measured recharge. Some component failures require additional cleaning or replacement parts according to manufacturer instructions.

FIND THE LEAK, THEN FIX IT

UV dye makes
leaks easier to trace.

A compatible fluorescent dye can circulate with the system’s oil. Where refrigerant and oil escape, a trace of dye may appear around the leak and become visible under a UV lamp.

Dye can help inspect accessible joints, hoses, condensers and service connections. Small or intermittent leaks may need time to leave a visible trace, and concealed components can require other checks. Old dye residue also needs careful interpretation.

Dye detects. It does not seal.

The type and quantity must match the system and manufacturer guidance. Adding excess dye or using the wrong oil can cause problems. Leak-stop additives are different from UV dye and are not a substitute for a proper repair.

Other ways to investigate a leak

Depending on the fault and available equipment, diagnosis may use an electronic refrigerant detector, controlled nitrogen or forming-gas testing, or an external leak-detection solution. Ask which test is suitable for your car and what the investigation includes.

Professional leak-testing methods are described by HELLA Tech World. Compatibility and dye-use guidance is covered by DENSO.

YOUR QUESTIONS ANSWERED

Before you book.

How often should my air conditioning be regassed?

Follow the vehicle manufacturer’s guidance and investigate a noticeable loss of cooling. A system that needs frequent recharging may have a leak; the right response is diagnosis rather than an automatic top-up.

How long does it take?

A straightforward recharge and a leak investigation can take different amounts of time. Confirm the expected appointment duration with the team; repairs or further testing may need another visit.

Will regassing fix a bad smell?

Not necessarily. Odours may relate to the evaporator, cabin filter or drainage. Ask about cabin filter checks and cleaning options separately from refrigerant servicing.

Can you service hybrids and electric cars?

Tell us the make, model and powertrain before booking. Electrically driven compressors can require particular oils and procedures, and refrigerant systems may also support battery thermal management. The team will confirm whether the requested work is suitable.

Is water underneath the car a sign of a leak?

Clear water dripping from the evaporator drain after A/C use can be normal condensation. A persistent refrigerant leak usually needs inspection; the refrigerant itself is not identified simply by seeing water beneath the vehicle.

What information should I give when booking?

Your registration, make and model, the symptoms, when cooling last worked, and any recent regas or repair. Mention whether cooling is worse at idle, whether airflow is weak, and any unusual noise or smell.
